DTS OWF Hawaiian Islands
During the early stages of World War II, intense combat operations occurred around Hawaii, primarily between Japanese forces and the U.S. Navy. These hostilities were initially sparked by the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, when Japan aimed to disable the American naval forces in a preemptive strike. Although the attack inflicted significant damage, it ultimately fell short of its objective, as a portion of the U.S. Pacific Fleet was not present in the harbor at the time.
Given the history of extensive wartime activities and military engagements around the Hawaiian Islands, NjordIC USA was tasked with conducting a thorough desktop study to assess and mitigate potential UXO risks within an OWF lease area. This desktop study involved multiple components: a UXO Threat Assessment to evaluate the likelihood and distribution of UXO in the area, a UXO Risk Assessment to understand potential risks to ongoing and future activities, and a UXO Risk Mitigation Strategy to provide guidelines on safely navigating or mitigating these hazards.
As part of this study, NjordIC USA’s experts conducted extensive archival research, drawing from a variety of historical military records and data sources. This rigorous archival investigation revealed a wealth of information, including detailed records of naval engagements, aerial bombing runs, minefield placements, and submarine patrol routes from the time. By analyzing this data, NjordIC USA’s team was able to pinpoint areas of particular concern where wartime actions likely resulted in UXO hazards.
This intensive analysis enabled NjordIC USA to accurately delineate suspected UXO zones, refining the boundaries of high-risk areas with precision. This focused delineation minimizes the need for large-scale clearance efforts and allows future development projects around Hawaii to proceed with a more targeted approach to UXO management, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency.
Overall, the study represents a robust and methodical approach to UXO risk management, equipping stakeholders with the insights needed to make informed decisions about activities in areas with historical wartime legacies.
