For a prominent subsea service provider, NjordIC USA LLC conducted an in-depth desktop study encompassing multiple key aspects to support safe offshore wind development. This extensive study comprised of a UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) Threat Assessment, a UXO Risk Assessment, and a UXO Risk Mitigation Strategy. The assessments and strategy were specifically tailored to address conditions at a proposed site where a major offshore wind developer aims to establish a floating offshore wind farm.

In preparing these assessments, NjordIC USA LLC concentrated particularly on the historical operational context of the area, which involved analyzing past offensive maneuvers carried out by Japanese submarines during wartime. This involved investigating records of submarine-launched attacks and determining the likelihood and nature of unexploded ordnance in the area. Additionally, the study analyzed the defensive measures that followed, including the response actions from the U.S. Air Force and Navy, which involved aerial and naval defense operations in the vicinity.

The insights from this research enabled NjordIC USA to provide a thorough and strategic mitigation plan for handling any potential UXO risks, ensuring that the subsea service provider and the offshore wind developer are fully informed and prepared to manage and reduce risks associated with unexploded ordnance in the project area.
